Frequently Asked Questions
Ordering
What is the minimum order?
Please order plants in the multiples specified on our price list for each plant. We sell wholesale plants usually in minimum quantities of 25. Allow us to keep our prices low by ordering in the indicated multiples.

Can I just get tags for certain plants (not my whole order)?
Please create two orders. One order should contain all the plants you need tags for and the other should contain the plants you don't need tags for.

I know what plants I want. When should I place my order?
Now. Order as soon as you know what you need. We often run out of popular plants early in the fall. Ordering early is your best chance to get the plants you want, when you want them. For large orders, we can custom grow plants to be ready when you need them. This requires at least 12 months notice.

I'm a new customer. Can I order now and pay later?
For new customers, payment must accompany the order. Check or credit card is acceptable.

What is a No.1?
This is the largest sized plant we offer. Because of the variety in perennials, it is impossible to classify them all by one criteria. We generally try to give size details within the catalog descriptions. Typically, #1 size plants are large enough for a 1 or 2 gallon container and #2 plants are appropriate for 4-6 inch pots.

Shipping
How much does shipping cost?
The actual cost of shipping your items will be billed to you on your invoice. If your order is substantial, we will recommend and secure a common carrier to handle the shipment which provides a better shipping rate.

What if there is a shortage in my shipment?
If your plant shipment is damaged in transit, or the quantity is not correct, please call us immediately. We will correct the issue as soon as possible.

How will you ship my order?
We use UPS and commercial carriers to deliver your plants to your desired location.

May I pick up my order from Newhouse Nursery?
Yes. Please let us know on the order blank, or use the special instructions area on our website. We will call you when your order is available for pickup. Shipping is generally open M-F, 8:30am-4pm EST. A map is available for your convenience.

When should I schedule my order for shipping?
Our large capacity cold storage allows us to ship your plants anytime during the winter months except during weeks of extreme cold.
For the greenhouse: As a general rule, schedule your order to allow 6-8 weeks of growing time in a cool 48-55 degree F greenhouse for spring growing.
For planting outdoors: schedule for arrival when conditions generally permit transplanting. Protect from freezing and excess rain. With a few exceptions, try to keep most plants on the dry side until they break dormancy.

Do you ship internationally?
Yes. This is a more difficult process due to the required inspections. We currently ship to Canada. We will consider shipping to other countries, if the order is over $2000. Special fees apply. We will work with you to deliver your plants, if we can.

Upon Arrival
I received my plants today, but I have a problem with them.
Your satisfaction is our priority. We do our best to make sure you receive the plants you ordered, in the quantity and timeframe you requested. If your plant shipment is damaged in transit, or the quantity is not correct, please call us immediately (within 10 days of shipment) at 1-800-793-4342 or 269-792-4300. We will correct the issue as soon as possible. Claims received more than 60 days after the shipdate will be denied.

What do I plant first?
Transplant all bare root plants first. Give special priority to Ajuga, Dianthus, Iberis, Lavandula and Phlox subulata. Finish with the items in plug or pot format.

I've received my plants. Can they wait to be planted?
We recommend potting up your plants ASAP. Keep unplanted perennials in a cool room (30-40F) for 2-3 days. Open boxes to allow air circulation.

My plants are frozen. Will they live?
Freezing and dormancy is a natural part of a plant's life. Gently remove the plants and allow them to slowly thaw in a cool room. Do not place them directly in a warm greenhouse or attempt to apply heat.
